Canoeing on the Delaware River

What to Bring

  1. Lunch in double plastic bags - put your lunch into one plastic bag and seal it and then put that into another plastic bag and seal it.
  2. Water - either a canteen of water or a liter bottle of water (no glass bottles).
  3. Pouch or Bag to hold lunch and water - something that can be secured to the crossbar in the boat (bring string if necessary).
  4. Old sneakers to wear in the boat - they will get wet.!
  5. Plastic bag for wet clothing (decent chance you'll get wet!)
  6. Sunscreen
  7. Hat
  8. Sunglasses
  9. Glasses Strap
  10. Towel
  11. Change of clothes
  12. Cash (for just in case,...)
  13. Cycling gloves (optional)

CLOTHING NOTES: I recommend wearing a bathing suit below whatever else (if anything) you might decide to wear in the canoe. There is a decent possibility that you will get wet! I personally wear a bathing suit and a T-shirt (to avoid sunburn mostly) if the weather is expected to be warm. (Cotton clothing will not keep you warm if wet, it can make you shiver!)

Driving Directions from NYC
to Lander's Minisink base, NY

Please note that although Lander's River Trips is headquartered in Narrowsburg, we are going to their Minisink base which is 15 miles south of Narrowsburg on the same road (Route 97).

Take the George Washington bridge to the Palisades Interstate Parkway North. After about 19 miles on the Palisades Parkway Exit onto 287 West which turns into Route 87 (NY State Thruway) which heads north.

After about 27 miles (from the Palisades Parkway), at Exit 16 (before a set of toll booths), take Route 17 (NOT 17M) West. Take Route 17 west for about 17 miles until Exit 121W where you intersect Route 84 West. Take Route 84 west until Exit 1, Port Jervis. Exit at Exit 1.

This part is tricky!, the signs posted may be confusing! Your goal is to get onto Route 97. At the first "T" when you exit Route 84 it is pretty obvious that you should go left (you can’t go straight!). At the next stoplight you should go straight.

You are now looking to get onto Route 97 North which starts on the north end of Port Jervis (the exit from Route 84 is on the south end of town). The signs for Route 97 may not appear initially. There may be signs for Route 6 or 42 . Follow the Route 6 or Route 42 signs until you see signs for Route 97 and then follow the signs for Route 97 North. In the middle of Port Jervis Route 6 makes a left turn. Do not make this left, continue straight following the Route 42 signs (straight). Please ask someone if you are not sure.

Take Route 97 North approximately 21 miles until just north of the town of Barryville to Lander's Minisink base. On the left hand side of the road (southbound) will be Lander's River Trip's Minisink base. There are a multiple of canoeing outfitters located right next to each other so please be careful to turn into the correct one. The distance from when you get off Route 84 until Lander's Minisink base is about 24 miles. The entire trip is about 111 miles and takes about 2 hours without traffic.

Please note that Lander's River Trips have a multiple of locations. We are going to the Minisink location.

Do not try to take Route 80 from the GW bridge to Routes 23, 206, or 15, these are much longer routes.

Other Useful Information

We are meeting promptly at 7:30am in front of TBA. Drivers should double park their cars in front of the building (please gas up BEFORE coming). Passengers who wish to have coffee should bring it to the meeting spot. All passengers are expected to contribute their fair share towards gas and tolls! We will return to the city at about dinner time.
