With the celebration of Hanukkah and the festivities of the silver anniversary Hanukkah Arts Festival behind us, we look forward to a number of winter programs. On January 20, Professor Marshall Berman will be the featured speaker at a Friday night potluck dinner and lecture. Professor Nancy Sinkoff will offer a course on European Jewry in the modern period beginning January 3. And we continue with the third in our series of Israeli films on January 8. Families will have the opportunity to enjoy a havdalah program on January 7 and a kiddush lunch on January 28, and school-age children are invited to a showing of the classic musical “Singin’ in the Rain” on January 19.

The month of December was a wonderful month of educational
partnership and fun at Ansche Chesed. At the Hanukkah Arts
Festival, Yaldaynu and Ansche Chesed cosponsored a Hanukkah
Arts Workshop for young children and their families, and the
Havurah School and Hebrew School cosponsored the classic New York
Egg Cream table. On December 16th, Hazzan Natasha Hirschhorn led
us in lovely family Kabbalat Shabbat services, and AC
parent Charlie Fersko read stories to kids after Shabbat
dinner. On Saturday, December 17th, a number of AC families
sponsored another wonderful Family Kiddush, at which
children and parents were able to nosh and shmooze together after
kids’ services. The next day, on Sunday, December 18th, ten
children from different segments of the AC community learned how
to make Hanukkah cookies with baker Betsy Lichtenstein in the AC
kitchen, aided by volunteers Fred Herschkowitz, Suzannah
Herschkowitz, and Katrina Kostro. On Sunday, December 25th, a
dozen 4th and 5th graders brought some holiday cheer to the Jewish
Home & Hospital Day Center. The visit was the first in a series of
small innovations that grew out of the synagogue’s work with
ReImagine. Contact Lauren at LKurland@AnscheChesed.org to get
involved in the work of this burgeoning Family Social Action
group.
We are looking for more families to sponsor our next family kiddush on January 28th. Sponsoring includes making a contribution to the children’s kiddush fund; we order the food and take care of all the rest of the details! Sponsors are also invited to assist in arranging the food on the tables the day of the kiddush. It’s a wonderful way to bring the community together. The Hebrew School ended a strong fall semester with a wonderful Hanukkah party, featuring musical performances from students in Gan through Vav, and a presentation by Matan, our special needs class. Members of the Zayin class assisted the younger kids by helping them line up for their performances, serve latkes, and wrap presents collected by Yaldaynu for the Ohel Children’s Home. Thanks to Zayin students Jacob Pastor, Effie Kline-Salamon, Ariel Cohen, Reuben Moreland for your assistance. School starts up again on January 3, 2006. Enjoy your Hanukkah break! While Hanukkah might still the holiday on all of our minds, the Ansche Chesed Hebrew School is looking forward to Purim, a quintessential children’s holiday replete with storytelling, costumes and noisemaking. To honor Purim and celebrate all the children of our community, the Ansche Chesed Hebrew School is commissioning a Megillat Esther, or scroll of Esther, as part of a fundraising effort for the school. A locally-based soferet, a female scribe, will be writing the Megillah; she will visit Ansche Chesed to share her work in the coming months. The Megillah will be presented to the community at our Purim Celebration on Sunday, March 12, 2006. Please consider donating generously to this very special project that will benefit all our families and children. As a participant in the Leadership Institute for Congregational School Principals (LICSP), a program jointly run by the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Hebrew Union College, and funded by the UJA, for the next two years I will be attending workshops and seminars to strengthen my leadership as a religious school principal. From January 14-21, I will be in Israel with LICSP for a Professional Development Seminar. During our time there, we will study at the Lokey Institute in Haifa, using Israel as a text to better inform and shape our understanding of the nature of afternoon religious school. One of the activities I am most looking forward to is a visit to Israeli state schools in Haifa, where we will have a chance to observe how Jewish studies are taught in the Jewish State. I look forward to sharing my experiences with you when I return. UPCOMING PROGRAMS Ansche Chesed is pleased to announce the launching of an innovative and exciting program to be held the weekend of May 19-21, 2006 geared for children who are soon to become b'nai mitzvah, and their families. The AC B’nai Mitzvah retreat will provide the opportunity to join together and explore the importance of this passage for our kids and our families in our children's lives and our own. We will have fun in the outdoors, away from the hustle and bustle of NYC. We will enjoy the spirit of Shabbat while finding time to study and play together at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires. Among the wide range of indoor and outdoor (weather permitting) activities that Camp Ramah offers are swimming, hiking, kayaking, a ropes course, zip line, hiking, arts and crafts. Additionally, special programming will be offered to siblings of different ages. The retreat will include all private accommodations and meals from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. While the details are still in development, the retreat will be reasonably priced, from approximately $85/children to $130/adult. For additional information and to reserve a spot, please email Rabbi Lauren Kurland at LKurland@anschechesed.org . If there is interest, we will arrange (at an additional cost) bus service; however one can also take MetroNorth to nearby Wingdale. Space is limited, so registration is available on a first come, first serve basis. -- Rabbi Lauren Kurland
Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky
You cannot practice traditional Judaism without reciting different kinds of blessings: in prayer, over food, upon doing commandments and in other settings. The Talmud and Halakhah prescribe saying 100 each day. Join Rabbi Kalmanofsky to explore why we say so many berakhot, what the literary forms mean and where they come from. Wednesday, January 4 at 8 p.m.
Professor Nancy Sinkoff
This four-part course will examine several key issues
challenging European Jewry in the modern period, 1750-1900 (the
economy, the State, religious authority, politics) and their
implications for American Jewish communal life. 4 Tuesdays, 7;30-8:45 p.m. January 3, 10 ,17, 24. AC members $60, non-members $80 Registration before the first class is required. Professor Marshall Berman
Friday Evening, January 20 One of America’s leading scholars of modern urban life, AC member Marshall Berman will discuss views of sacred and profane cities in Jewish history and experience.
