September Highlights

September brings the Yamim Nora'im - neither late nor early this year, but on time!  We wish everyone a Shana Tova u'Metukah - a good and sweet year.  Prior to the holidays, join Rabbi Kalmanofsky as we begin preparing to renew ourselves spiritually.  See "The High Holidays and Sukkot" below.  Those of you who love to sing are invited to join Shirei Chesed, AC's community chorus, which resumes rehearsals on Thursday, September 6.  After the celebration of Sukkot and the joy of Simhat Torah, we will offer adults a host of opportunities for learning, including a class on the basics of Judaism taught by Rabbi Kalmanofsky and Rabbi Kurland, beginning on October 2.  Rabbi Neil Gillman will teach a class on the many faces of God, and Tamara Green will explore Jewish views of spirituality and illness.  And if you don't yet read Hebrew, Rivka Widerman will guide you through the alef bet.  The Ansche Chesed Program Guide will soon arrive in your homes, with a full description of programs for children and adults.

Message from the Executive Director

At first glance the summer might seem a slow time at Ansche Chesed. Many congregants are on vacation and attendance on Shabbat is lighter. Our afternoon Hebrew Schools are not in session, and our programming and classes ebb likes the tides of summer.

But appearances can be deceptive. The front office is busy processing membership renewals and charting out High Holiday tickets. What starts as a steady stream increases in volume until the post labor-day flood of requests. The Hebrew School starts gearing up and the maintenance staff takes advantage of less activity in the building to clean, patch, prep and paint. Pews get polished and carpets get cleaned. All with the goal of making Ansche Chesed ready for the New Year.

This summer we are completing required Local Law 11 work, and within a week the sidewalk bridge will be removed and the patching, pointing and small amount of roof work will be completed. The project is coming in on budget and the work has caused relatively little disruption to the community. We managed to make most of the roof accessible to the schools for their summer programs.

This summer we also completed the installation of a public address system that works through our telephone system and connects to loudspeakers that have been placed on every floor. Now, in an instant, we can communicate with all our tenants and anyone inside the building, alerting them to any potential emergency. This work has made us a safer institution for all the many adults and children that use the building on a daily basis.

We have also installed security cameras tied into a 24-hour DVR monitoring system. Cameras are in place in the lobby, around the perimeter of the building and on the roof, and there are three monitoring stations.  A panic button that connects to an outside 24- hour monitoring system is in place as well.

All the security work is being funded through a Homeland Security Grant, and I want to thank all the members of the security committee, and especially David Pollock, for helping us achieve this new level of security.

And finally, we will be fixing our elevator floor and installing lovely new carpet tiles in the Hirsch Hall lobby thanks to the hard work of Bali Miller and Jane Head. The work will be completed before the holidays.

This is what happens at Ansche Chesed in the quiet times!

         -- Josh Hanft

September Study Groups

SHABBAT MORNING STUDY
PARASHAT HaSHAVUA WITH RASHI AND RASHBAM
Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky
In France, in the 11th and 12th centuries, Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Itzhaki) and his grandson, Rashbam (Rabbi Samuel ben Meir) forever changed the way Jews would study Torah.  They developed new methods for uncovering what they viewed as the Torah's simple meaning, redrawing the boundaries of "traditional Jewish interpretation."  Join us to see the weekly reading through their eyes.
Shabbat mornings, 9:30-10:30 am, beginning September 8.
4 weeks, alternating with 4-week sessions led by Rabbi David Gedzelman.

Shirei Chesed Community Chorus Welcomes New Singers

If you have a passion for Jewish music and would like to raise your voice in a welcoming community of singers, we encourage you to visit Ansche Chesed on September 6, 2007, when the Community Chorus Shirei Chesed under the direction of Hazzan Natasha J. Hirschhorn resumes its rehearsals.

This is the third season for the chorus founded in the Fall of 2005 with the generous support of the Rabbi Gershon Schwartz Memorial Fund.  The chorus repertoire is inspired by the richness and diversity of Jewish music from around the globe, ranging from hauntingly rendered liturgical offerings, to updated arrangements of world folk music, new compositions, and Hassidic niggunim.  The chorus performs at Ansche Chesed concerts and events, as well as in the community at large.

We are especially in need of tenors and basses, but welcome all voice parts. Shirei Chesed meets in the Ansche Chesed chapel on Thursdays, 7:45-9:15 September-June.  Ability to carry a tune is important; reading Hebrew or music is not required.

The fee for those who are not members of the Ansche Chesed community is $90 per semester or $180 per year.  For members there is no fee. For more information, please call 212-865-0600 ext. 205 or email CantorNatasha@gmail.com.

EVERYBODY KNOWS . . . THE BASICS YOU NEVER LEARNED
Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky and Rabbi Lauren Kurland
Does it sometimes seem that you are in the dark about Jewish tradition while everyone around you already knows it all?  Maybe you grew up unaffiliated?  Or non-Jewish?  Maybe you never asked that question on your mind?  Here's a chance to ask your questions and get your hands on the basics.

THE HUMAN FACE OF GOD
Rabbi Neil Gillman
In this seminar, the group will read biblical, rabbinic, and liturgical texts that reflect some of God's many faces, both pleasaant and unpleasant.  Rabbi Gillman will also address some methodological issues such as the nature of God-talk, the use of metaphors and word pictures, and the possible origins of Judaism's many faces of God.

October 10, 17, 24, 31, November 7, 14
AC members $90 / Non-members $120

SPIRITUALITY AND ILLNESS: A JEWISH VIEW
Dr. Tamara Green
What do the accounts in Tanakh and Talmud of the suffering of Sarah, of Jacob, of Isaac, of Miriam and others reveal about the Jewish understanding of illness?  Is it possible to find spiritual meaning for our own lives in these stories?  This course will examine Bilbical texts and their rabbinic interpretations, as we explore our own responses to the ways in which Jewish tradition has interpreted the connections between spirituality and physical suffering.
4 Thursdays, 7:30-9:00 pm
October 11, 18, 25, November 1
AC members $60 / Non-members $80

LEARN TO READ HEBREW
Rivka Widerman

To register for classes with a fee:

Shabbat Learning in October
LEARNER'S MINYAN
Many of Ansche Chesed's active members first became more knowledgeable about Judaism and more involved with Ansche Chesed through their participation in a Learner's Minyan.  Join us for a friendly, spiritual, and anxiety-free service exploring the basics of Saturday morning prayer. You do not need to know how to read Hebrew.
Shabbat mornings, 10:00-11:00 am
October 6 - December 15.  (No session November 24)
Led by Ben Shalva, AC's rabbinic intern.

MYSTICISM, MIDRASH, AND MORE
Rabbi David Gedzelman
Join Rabbi David Gedzelman on Shabbat mornings to look at the weekly Torah portion through the lens of various Hasidic masters, midrashim, and traditional commentaries.  Open up the language of the Hebrew bible to an exploration of meaning and spirituality on both the level of personal journey and process, and the level of communal values and ideals.
Shabbat mornings, 9:30-10:30 am, beginning October 13.
4 weeks,  alternating with 4-week sessions led by Rabbi Kalmanofsky.

Weekly Study Groups Beginning in October
TALMUD STUDY (HEVRA SHAS)
Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky
What topic could be more important today for Jews in America and Israel than the rules of war and the vices and virtues manifest in battle?  Please join us to study Sotah, Chapter 8, and related commentaries.  Class members usually use the Artscroll Hebrew-English Talmud, which enables everyone to enjoy and engage with the material.
Every Wednesday, 6:30-7:30 pm, beginning October 10

JUDGES AND LAWLESSNESS: A BIBLICAL READING GROUP
Rabbi Judith Edelstein
The Book of Judges is bloody, sexy anarchy, a collection of tales from the "days when there was no king in Israel, each person doing what seemed right to himself."  This book of the bible includes outlaws, assassins, and the most powerful woman in the bible, Deborah.  The group will read the stories in English, but participants are encouraged to bring insights from the Hebrew text.
4 Tuesdays, beginning October 9, 7:30-8:30 pm

LITERATURE AT LUNCHTIME
Rabbi Shmuel Sandberg
All are welcome to join this daytime group for a discussion of short Jewish literary works, exploring either a poem or a short story each month. Poems and short stories will range from Shirat HaYam (the Song at the Sea) to Robert Pinsky, and short stories from the Book of Judith to Nathan Englander.  All texts will be read together in class, in English, so no preparation is required.
5 Wednesdays, 12:00-1:30 pm
October 17, 24, 31, November 14, 21

SHARED BIBLE, DIFFERENT RELIGIONS: INTERFAITH STUDY WITH AC AND ADVENT LUTHERAN CHURCH
Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky and Reverend J. Elise Brown
Judaism and Christianity share holy texts and a common sacred history -- stretching back to the covenant God made with Abraham -- even as our religions differ in important ways.  We also share an Upper Wet Side neighborhood, where our diverse faith communities prize different traditions and beliefs, yet share many values and work on the same social problems.

Join AC and Advent Lutheran Church (93rd Street and Broadway) to study Bible texts beloved by both faiths, including some used in each of our liturgies.  Members of our two congregations can come to understand each other and ourselves more profoundly, and can deepen the bonds that make our neighborhood special.
6 Mondays at 7:30 pm
October 15, 29, November 12, 26, December 10, 17
Location TBA.
