November Highlights

Intermarriage is an issue that now affects a majority of Jewish families.  Beginning on November 20, members of interfaith families can attend a series of classes, Jewish Sacred Moments, to learn more about the Jewish life cycle and to share experiences.  And our fall Shabbaton on November 30 and December 1, Intermarriage and the American Jewish Family, will explore both sociological and personal issues.

Contemplative studies can be pursued in several ways this fall:once a month, Rabbi Kalmanofsky will lead a study session on the Psalms on Shabbat afternoon (first session November 3), and monthly Jewish meditation practice will begin on Shabbat afternoon, November 17.  Rabbi Kalmanofsky will teach a 6-session class beginning November 20, Praying Deeply, Within the Book, to explore the depth of the prayers in the siddur and how they can enable us to express ourselves more completely.

Special events this month include a book talk on November 15 by Rabbi Burt Visotzky to celebrate the upcoming publication of his first novel, A Delightful Compendium of Consolation: A Fabulous Tale of Romance, Adventure, and Faith in the Medieval Mediterranean.  Looking forward to Hanukkah, Hazzan Hirschhorn will conduct a holiday song workshop on November 12, where everyone can learn new songs and enjoy singing old ones.

Families with young children are invited to participate in the first monthly Friday evening Tot Shabbat service and oneg on November 2. Our ever-popular Shabbat afternoon gym program begins on November 3.  Social action activities in November include 6th and 7th graders cooking for the homeless shelter, and our annual Room to Grow clothing, toy, and baby equipment drive starts on November 26.

Message from the Education Director

If there is a needy person among you, do not harden your heart and shut your hand . . . rather, you must open your hand . . . for the poor will never disappear from the earth."

(Deuteronomy 15:7-8, 11)

Although Deuteronomy may never have been able to conceive of a place like New York City, 21st century New Yorkers know well what it's like to live among people who are homeless, hungry, and down on their luck.

Following the commandment to open our hands, our hearts and our homes to the poor, Ansche Chesed responds in part by providing a homeless shelter for ten men 365 nights a year. The shelter provides these ten guests protection from the elements, a warm shower, dinner (usually a pre-packaged frozen meal), and a light breakfast. In addition, the shelter volunteers, who serve as either early evening or overnight hosts, provide a warm and cheerful welcome to the guests, many of whom work during the day but still cannot afford housing.

Over the years, many families and teenagers have served as hosts for the shelter. Motivated by the desire to provide more opportunities for families with younger children to also participate in deeds of chesed (loving kindness), Ansche Chesed's Family Social Action Committee has developed a series of family cooking events to benefit the shelter.

The program kicked off last February, when the Committee sponsored "Food and Shelter," a program at which a formerly homeless man spoke about his experiences on the street, followed by an opportunity for families to bake cookies for the shelter guests. The program was a hit. The AC families were deeply impressed by the experience, and the guests were likewise moved by the treats cooked with love and still warm from the oven.

The Committee decided in June to expand their culinary prowess and prepare lasagna and fruit salad in addition to cookies for the shelter. This program was also successful. FSAC member Deborah Pastor remembers the "looks of happiness on the face of the men when we delivered the food, the confidence of the kids when they were cooking and cleaning up, and also, how nice it was to chat with other parents from different parts of the congregation."

Her daughter, fifth-grade chef Aviva Pastor, was so deeply moved by the experience that she encouraged her mother and the Committee to commit to monthly cooking events for the shelter. "It felt good and I felt like I did a mitzvah to cook for the shelter [guests]," Aviva said. "It was really nice to know that while you are eating your dinner, they are eating a good dinner too and you are the one who made it for them."

Laughing that there's "just something about food and Jews," Deborah reflected that cooking for the guests is about "as think globally, act locally, as it gets." She also shared that for the shelter guests, providing home-cooked meals is an incredibly powerful validation of how important they are in the lives of others. She related a story of how in February, the group made a poster that had different greetings from the families on it, like "Enjoy your dinner," and "Welcome to Ansche Chesed." For a few weeks, the sign was posted in the shelter room, and then disappeared. Deborah said that on a recent visit to the shelter, she discovered that one of the guests takes the sign out every night and places it above his bed, and then removes it in the morning to store it with his personal belongings.

Deborah describes cooking for the shelter as a "small gem of a mitzvah," which all families should make time for despite the busy schedules so many of us keep. The Family Social Action Committee's long-term goals include further cooking evenings as well as more kids' involvement in planning and implementing the events. The Committee also recently organized a gleaning/harvesting event to benefit the poor that took place at the Garden of Eve farm in Long Island.

A Delightful Compendium of Consolation:
A Fabulous Tale of Romance, Adventure and Faith
in the Medieval Mediterranean

The mixing of fact and fiction and the interplay of Jewish and Muslim culture are at the heart of A Delightful Compendium of Consolation: A Fabulous Tale of Romance, Adventure and Faith in the Medieval Mediterranean (Ben Yehuda Press, March 2008), a novel by Burton L. Visotzky.  Visotzky creates an impassioned portrayal of a time when Jews and Muslims lived together in reasonable harmony.

Advance copies of the book will be available.

Refreshments.

Monthly, Shabbat afternoons at 4pm.
First session November 3, second session December 8.

Jewish Sacred Moments: A Class for Interfaith Families
Dasee Berkowitz, MA, Jewish Educational Consultant
It can be hard work for interfaith families (including parents of intermarried children) to celebrate sacred moments in ways that satisfy everyone.  In this class, participants can learn more about each stage of the Jewish life cycle: birth, coming of age, marriage, death, and mourning, as they gain resources to enrich their Jewish life passages.  Participants will also have opportunities to reflect on negotiating diverse families' needs by sharing experiences and strategies with each other.
5 Tuesdays, 7:30-9pm.
Beginning November 20.
AC members $75 / Non-members $100
(To register, please call 212.865.0600 ext. 205 or email sposen@anschechesed.org)

Praying Deeply, Within the Book
Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky
Worship services ought to be a key to unlock your heart, enabling you to pour out your heart like water.  But sometimes the key needs its own key!  Join us to study the Shabbat morning liturgy, discussing the historical contexts of the prayers, their structure, their poetic power, and their theological images.
6 Tuesdays, 7:30-9pm
Beginning November 20.  (Note new start date)

Intermarriage: A Shabbat of Learning and Exploration
November 30 - December 1

INTERMARRIAGE AND AMERICAN JEWISH FAMILIES

The American Jewish family is changing before our eyes.  Ever-increasing proportions -- including even proud and committed Jews -- select non-Jews as partners.  No family, no matter how observant or educated, is insulated from the transformations that result when Jews have non-Jewish spouses, parents, siblings, in-laws, children, and grandchildren.

Join us for a Shabbaton devoted to helping our community understand the transformations of intermarriage.

Friday NIght Dinner and Program
Ansche Chesed members Pearl Beck, Bethamie Horowitz, and Charles Kadushin will share their expertise in analyzing the social science and demographic research.

Shabbat Lunch Program
Sociologist Sherry Israel will speak, and will be joined by members of our community who belong to interfaith families.

Seudah Shlishit Program
Rabbi Charles Simon, an AC member who is the Executive Director of The Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs, and who has worked extensively with interfaith families, will continue the discussion with the participation of members of the AC community who belong to interfaith families.

Shabbat Learning

Learners' Minyan
Many of Ansche Chesed's active members first became more knowledgeable about Judaism and more involved with Ansche Chesed through their participation in a Learner's Minyan.  Join us for a friendly, spiritual, and anxiety-free service exploring the basics of Saturday morning prayer. You do not need to know how to read Hebrew.
Shabbat mornings, 10:00-11:00 am
Through December 15.  (No session November 24)
Led by Ben Shalva, AC's rabbinic intern.

Mysticism, Midrash, and More
Rabbi David Gedzelman
Join Rabbi David Gedzelman on Shabbat mornings to look at the weekly Torah portion through the lens of various Hasidic masters, midrashim, and traditional commentaries.  Open up the language of the Hebrew bible to an exploration of meaning and spirituality on both the level of personal journey and process, and the level of communal values and ideals.
Shabbat mornings, 9:30-10:30am
Through November 3.  Next 4-week series begins December 8.

Parashat HaShavua with Rashi and Rashbam
Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky
Rashi and Rashbam, who lived in France in the 11th and 12th centuries, forever changed the way Jews would study Torah.  They developed new methods for uncovering what they viewed as the Torah's simple meaning, redrawing the boundaries of "traditional Jewish interpretation."  Join us to see the weekly reading through their eyes.
Shabbat mornings, 9:30-10:am
Next 4-week series begins December 10.

Shabbat Meditation

Would you like to deepen your level of relaxation, attain greater peace and focus, and connect to the spiritual reservoir of energy that Jewish meditation offers? For those of you who have had a taste of meditation around town, now we will be offering a monthly session here at AC.  Led by Sheila Lewis, Sheldon Lewis, and Arleen Stern.

Rabbi Shmuel Sandberg
All are welcome to join this daytime group for a discussion of short Jewish literary works, exploring either a poem or a short story each month. Our past events have been moving experiences for both the guests of the shelter as well as the families.  In addition to cooking, families will have the option of delivering the food and notes personally to the shelter.  The events have also been a lot of fun and an opportunity to meet other members.  Please RSVP to Deborah at deborah.pastor@privateeram.com.
