A Simcha at Minyan M'at

Appendix Ten: Functions and Honors

Appendix Ten: Functions and Honors

Here is a list of honors that baalei simcha may appoint. Please be absolutely sure that the appropriate MM coordinator is advised as early as possible (even if you choose not to make your own personal assignment). This will assure everyone that these tasks will be taken care of and that they are not assigned twice to different people.

Positions Comments
Davener(s)
  • Service can be split up; e.g. Shacharit and Musaf
  • Must be MM members who have previously led our davening
  • Can be bar/bat mitzvah
  • Check for any additionals prayers required for that Shabbat
  • Discuss with davening coordinator
Torah Service: Gabaiim
  • Two positions, gabai rishon and gabai shinei
  • Both must be MM members (exception: if the bar/bat mitzvah is leyning, gabai shinei can be the tutor)
  • Discuss with MM's gabai, especially to discuss procedures and minhagim of the Minyan
Torah Service:

Leyners

  • Generally 1 - 7 aliyot
  • May include the bar/bat mitzvah but not required
  • Discuss with leyning coordinator
Torah Service:

Aliyot

  • Generally 7 aliyot on a Shabbat
  • Must be Jewish by traditional definition
  • Couples (not simply two people) are acceptable or they may have separate aliyot
  • Bar/bat mitzvah required, generally the last one (or second to last if s/he is not doing the haftorah)
  • Give your gabai a detailed list that includes the order and the Hebrew names (names of both mother and father -- as is MM's policy)
  • Some people have furnished tapes to people who are unfamiliar with the brachot. It is helpful to practice with people who are unaccustomed to having an aliyah.
Torah Service: Hagbah & Galila
  • If two Torahs are used during the leyning, these positions are assigned twice.
  • Be sure that people know how to and are able to discharge these tasks properly -- even galila requires attentiveness to the Torah.
  • Tell your gabai who these people are.
Torah Service: Haftorah

  • May be but does not have to be bar/bat mitzvah
  • Must have the last aliyah or maftir
Darshan
  • Must be a MM member
  • Can be but not required to be bar/bat mitzvah
  • Ten minute timeframe
  • Tell d'var torah coordinator
Ark/Torah responsibilities

  • Check with your davener for times when the ark needs to be opened and when someone other than the davener will need to hold the Torah(s).
  • On a typical Shabbat, there are two opportunities for someone to open/shut the ark: When the Torah is taken out for the Torah service and when it is replaced at the end.
  • Let your gabai know, if you are leaving it to his/her discretion that day.
Gift Presenters (for bar/bat mitzvah)

  • MM present (must be a MM member)
  • AC present (AC may determine presenter)
  • Tell your Simcha Committee point person
Page Announcer
  • At a few strategic moments (but not so often as to be intrusive), page announcements may be helpful to people who may not be familiar with our siddur or davening.
  • Tell your Simcha Committee point person
Kiddush
  • Anyone obligated to make kiddush is welcomed to lead us.
Motzi and Brachot HaMazon
  • If you serve bread, you can appoint someone to make motzi and someone to lead Brachot HaMazon.
  • Anyone obligated can lead us in these blessings.
