SUMMARY:Non-Orthodox Conversion in Israel
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky for a roundtable discussion on the Recent Israeli Supreme Court Decision on non-Orthodox conversion\, and the legal status of non-Orthodox streams in Israel. The conversation will include the legal perspective\, the religious perspective as well as the personal perspective. \nJoining Rabbi Kalmanofsky for this program will be: \nRabbi Peretz Rodman serves as head of the rabbinical court (av bet din) of the Masorti (Conservative) rabbinate in Israel. A graduate of Brandeis University and Boston’s Hebrew College\, he was ordained by the Schechter Rabbinical Seminary in Jerusalem. He has published over 100 popular and academic articles in Jewish studies. A native of the United States\, he and his family have made Jerusalem their home since 1990. \nTammy Gottlieb has been a senior staff member of the Masorti movement and is currently the Associate Director of Communications & New Initiatives. Tammy served as a combat soldier at the Caracal Battalion in the IDF\, back when only few women joined combat units. She has been an active member of Women of the Wall for over 10 years\, and is currently the vice Chair of the organization. \nKarina Ruth\, is an Austrian citizen\, and completed her giyyur (conversion) with the Masorti Beit Din in the past few years. In preparation for this\, she spent many months of study with Rabbi Rodman.\n \nThis program is part of the Second National Masorti Shabbat\, in which over 35 congregations from coast to coast are highlighting the work of The Masorti Foundation for Conservative Judaism in Israel.
