SUMMARY:The Knesset: Politics of Governing a Democratic Jewish State
DESCRIPTION:Ansche Chesed is glad to welcome Knesset member Asaf Zamir of the Blue and White Party for a conversation about the complicated politics that goes into governing a State that is both Jewish and Democratic. This program\, a collaboration with The Jewish Pluralism Watch of the Masorti Movement in Israel will include a short briefing on the Kenesset\, followed by a presentation by MK Zamir and an opportunity for Q&A to follow. \nAsaf Zamir\, Member of Knesset on behalf of the Blue and White Party\, served as Minister of Tourism of Israel until October 2020 when resigned from the government in protest against Netanyahu. \nBefore entering the Knesset Zmir founded and chaired the “Rov Ha’ir” municipal party elected to the Tel-Aviv – Jaffa Municipal Council for the third time. He served as Deputy Mayor of Tel-Aviv -Jaffa from 2008 until 2018 and as acting mayor and head of the education portfolio from 2013 until 2018. \nIn this capacity Zamir helped build educational institutes in the city and worked for the establishment of Arab-Jewish and religious-secular joint educational frameworks. \nZamir chaired the board of ‘The Yehoshua Rabinovich Foundation for the Arts\, Tel Aviv\, a leading Israeli foundation active in supporting literature\, music\, dance\, plastic art\, experimental theater and cinema\, from 2010 until 2019. \nIn 2011 he established the “Mitpakdim Movement” aimed at motivating youth to enroll as party members to all political parties in Israel\, and promoting public awareness about the importance of political activity amongst citizens.
