SUMMARY:Pride Shabbat Address by State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal: Fighting Back Against the National Assault on LGBTQ Rights
DESCRIPTION:Join us to mark Pride Shabbat with a visit from our district’s State Senator\, Brad Hoylman-Sigal. At about noon\, the senator will speak about critical social justice issues affecting LGBTQ people and all the communities who love them. \n \n\nState Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal\, the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee\, represents New York’s 47th State Senate District on Manhattan’s West Side\, running five miles from Christopher Street to West 103rd Street. Brad has successfully championed progressive reforms on a wide range of issues\, including housing\, transportation\, public education\, LGBTQ rights\, the environment and seniors. He has passed over 200 bills in the Senate\, including legislation to ban ghost guns\, prohibit ICE in courtrooms\, and the Adult Survivors Act\, which enabled survivors like E. Jean Carroll to revive legal claims against their abusers. Brad has also championed LGBTQ human rights laws such as the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA)\, which extended human rights protections to transgender New Yorkers\, and a ban on so-called “conversion therapy.” In addition to numerous other progressive bills\, he currently sponsors the Trans Safe Haven bill\, which passed the Senate and Assembly this last session. This bill would protect transgender youth and their families as they seek gender affirming care in New York State. \nSenator Hoylman-Sigal\, his husband David\, and his two young daughters are members of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah\, the LGBTQ synagogue.

Snacks\, beverages and books available for purchase. \nThis week we welcome Michael Frank\, author of One Hundred Saturdays: Stella Levi and the Search for a Lost World\, and Elizabeth Graver\, author of Kantika\, in conversation. \nSee our full Scribblers lineup and learn more about our authors. \n  \n\nOne Hundred Saturdays: Stella Levi and the Search for a Lost World\nMichael Frank\nMichael Frank is the author of What Is Missing\, a novel\, and The Mighty Franks\, a memoir\, which was awarded the 2018 JQ Wingate Prize and was named one of the best books of the year by The Telegraph and The New Statesman. Selected as one of the ten best books of 2022 by The Wall Street Journal\, One Hundred Saturdays received a Natan Notable Book Award\, two National Book Awards from the Jewish Book Council\, and the Sophie Brody Award for outstanding achievement in Jewish literature.  A 2020 Guggenheim Fellow\, Frank lives in New York City and Camogli\, Italy. \n\nKantika\nElizabeth Graver\nElizabeth Graver’s fifth novel\, Kantika (Metropolitan Books/Holt\, 2023)\, was inspired by her grandmother\, Rebecca née Cohen Baruch Levy\, who was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Istanbul\, and whose tumultuous and shape-shifting life journey took her to Spain\, Cuba and New York.  German and Turkish editions are forthcoming. Elizabeth’s fourth novel\, The End of the Point\, was long-listed for the 2013 National Book Award in Fiction and selected as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Her other novels are Awake\, The Honey Thief\, and Unravelling. Her story collection\, Have You Seen Me?\, won the 1991 Drue Heinz Literature Prize. Her work has been anthologized in Best American Short Stories\, Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards\, The Pushcart Prize Anthology\, and Best American Essays. The mother of two daughters\, she teaches at Boston College.
