Learners’ Service
It can be hard to enjoy services – to find the prayers spiritually elevating or comforting – when you're unsure where we are in the book, what comes next, when to sit or stand, what to say or sing or just skip. That's why our shul has a proud tradition of learning services, to help everyone find his or her place. Kabbalat Shabbat
Each Friday evening Ansche Chesed comes together to welcome Shabbat in the chapel on the ground floor. Services are often followed by an oneg Shabbat or a more formal dinner with a speaker. We wish we were hosting our usual public Seder, but that is obviously impossible. Under normal circumstances, we would not choose to have a seder through electronic media, but these are not normal circumstances. Given all the social distancing, we need some communal togetherness. Please join Rabbi Kalmanofsky and Hazzan Hirschhorn for Havdalah, followed by a taste of the Song of Songs, through singing and text study. We traditionally read this passionate and multilayered text on the intermediate Shabbat of Passover following the Torah reading. This year - different from all others - we are still finding a way to drink deeply from the well of our tradition, and fill our hearts with joy and love emanating from these sacred verses. On Yom Kippur, and in the final days of Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot, Jews observe Hazkarot Neshamot or Yizkor , the first word of that liturgy.. During this health crisis, when we will not have public services on that date, please join us for a virtual Yizkor service via Zoom on the sixth day of Passover, before the concluding Hag begins, to remember your loved ones, to say kaddish and to pledge tzedaka in their names. Anyone who has ever visited Ansche Chesed’s morning minyan will tell you that it is something very special. Meeting in the chapel on the ground floor, the minyan brings together all segments of Ansche Chesed’s diverse community. They gather to say Kaddish for loved ones, to comfort others in mourning, to celebrate simchahs (joyous occasions) and to ground themselves before starting their day.
